Drugs seized near Poteet Elementary school
The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant Tuesday morning in Poteet resulting in the arrest of a Poteet resident and the seizure of Methamphetamine, high-grade Marijuana and pills. The Sheriff’s Narcotics Investigation Unit conducted an investigation responding to reports that illegal narcotics were being sold out of a residence at 579 School Drive.
Sheriff’s Investigators obtained a search warrant from Justice of the Peace Precinct 3, Orlando Carrasco. Shortly after 9 a.m. the Sheriff’s Office Special Operation Unit (S.O.U.) served the warrant.
The occupant of the house attempted to flee out the back door but was quickly taken into custody by deputies. Inside the residence investigators found the Marijuana and Methamphetamine in plain-view on an end-table beside a recliner. “The narcotics were packaged up in small bags consistent with drug dealing,” stated Sheriff David Soward. Sheriff Soward stated approximately 3 grams of Methamphetamine was seized along with a quantity of Marijuana. The sheriff estimated the street value on the illegal drugs at over $500.
Arrested was Derek Atkins age 30, of Poteet. Atkins was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, over 1 gram less than 4 gram, with intent to deliver and Possession of Marijuana under 2 ounces. “The residence where the narcotics were seized is 2,100 feet from the Poteet Elementary School”, Sheriff Soward explained. “Anytime we can take down a local drug dealer selling drugs in our neighborhoods, it’s a good bust”, the Sheriff added.
