HONDO—The Pleasanton softball team went 2-2 at the Hondo tournament over the weekend, picking up a win against state-ranked Natalia in the process.
Playing in the second of back-to-back games Friday afternoon, the Lady Eagles scored all their runs in the sixth inning of a 4-1 victory over the Lady Mustangs, who are ranked No. 4 in Class 3A.
Natalia broke up a scoreless game in the top of the sixth to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Mustangs could not tack on additional runs, however, as Pleasanton used an unconventional 6-3-2 double play to get out of a jam.
A handful of defensive plays highlighted the win for the Lady Eagles and starting pitcher Madison McDonald, who allowed five hits.
Pleasanton tied the game in the home half of the frame on a fielder’s choice hit by Chloe Bryant. Dominique Owen, who went 2 for 3, had an RBI before an error put the Lady Eagles on top 3-1.
Brenda Leal extended the advantage to 4-1 on an RBI single to left field.
Earlier, Pleasanton beat D’Hanis 6-1 to start the tournament.
Laney Esquivel opened the game with an inside-the-park homer and finished with three RBIs. The senior catcher also had a double, going 2 for 4.
Owen was the winning pitcher for the Lady Eagles, who got two singles apiece from Bailey Lopez and Ilysa Ramirez. Owen allowed five hits, one walk and one earned run while striking out four.
Pleasanton dropped its last two games Saturday. Hondo, which beat the Lady Eagles 8-5 four days prior, topped Pleasanton 5-4 in a six-inning game.
The Lady Eagles trailed 5-0 entering the final frame before their rally fell short. McDonald led the offense, going 2 for 3.
Later that day, Pleasanton dropped a 2-1 contest to 2A state-ranked Sabinal.
The Lady Jackets scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. The teams were locked at 1-1 after the opening frame.
Esquivel had two of the Lady Eagles’ five hits, going 2 for 3 at the plate.
Pleasanton (5-7 overall) faced 4A state-ranked Pearsall at home Tuesday with district play looming March 13 against Beeville.
