The United States Postal Service closed Whitsett’s post office, which served 50 post office box customers, on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013.
Sam Bolen, News Media Contact with the United States Postal Service said in a press release that those 50 P.O. Box customers can keep the same address and zip code.
However, USPS is sending their mail to the Post Office at 2905 Commerce St., in Campbellton after Friday. USPS physically moved Whitsett’s P.O. boxes to that location as of Oct. 7.
Daniel Reyes III, the Alamo Area manager of Post Office Operations for the USPS Rio Grande District apologized for any inconvenience that this closure caused. “Customers who need further assistance may stop by or contact staff at the Campbellton Post Office during regular business hours, or call the Postal Service’s general information desk, at 1-800-275-8777.”
As to why the post office was shut down, Bolen said that the current building lease expired
Oct. 8, and that the USPS could not negotiate a new lease.
Bolen reminded citizens that the Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
Whitsett’s Post Office will be the fifth closure in the USPS Rio Grande District since 2011. According to Bolen, “Eighty percent of the cost of running these post offices is the labor”.
Whitsett’s Post Office had their hours reduced to 3 hours of operation a day, as did the Campbellton
Fourteen post offices in the Rio Grande District are under an emergency suspension. These suspensions are implemented to allow the USPS to find workers who would be able to work the reduced amount of hours, according to Bolen.
The Whitsett Post Office also underwent an emergency suspension before it closed.
