Western fun for the whole family at Ropin’ at the River Saturday

Western fun for the whole family at Ropin’ at the River this Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pleasanton River Park.

Pleasanton Parks and Recreation and the City of Pleasanton have planned and prepared a free event that caters to all ages and interests.

The event kicks off with a quilt show. There will also be a farmer’s market featuring local producers selling homegrown and homemade goods. Find homemade soaps, scents, strawberries, farm fresh eggs, breads, wine, herbs, flower bundles, pastas and much more.

Cow Patty Bingo sponsored by the Pleasanton Rotary Club, always a crowd favorite, gives individuals a chance to win big bucks for a $10 investment that goes towards scholarships.

Chicken Roping open to kids ages 4 and under creates a memory that will last a lifetime. There will also be hay bales and other roping competitions taking place around the chicken roping pen where kids can try to win a prize.

The Cow Milking Demonstration, sponsored by the Southwest Dairy Farmers, is an educational experience for all kids.

 

 

A Historical Cowboy Exhibit put on by the Atascosa County Historical Commission includes demonstrations like building a campfire, fishing, cooking and more. This will take place from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Texas Game Warden – OGT, “Operation Game Thief,” educates participants on the rules of Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Armadillo races will be hosted 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. No registration is needed.

The BBQ cook off will start on Friday, May 7. You can enter under three categories: brisket, pork spareribs and chicken halves. The grand champion will have the highest pay-out of $1,000, and the reserve grand champion will receive a $500 payout. First place for each category will receive $300, second place for each category will receive $200 and third place for each category will receive $100. In addition to the payouts, buckles will be given to the grand champion, reserve grand champion and first place in each category. The buckles are sponsored by Sureco Metal Building Construction. Preregistration is available and preferred. You can register by emailing jmenchaca@pleasantontx. gov. Entry is $150. There will also be onsite registration available.

The BBQ cook off judging will take place from 12 p.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8. The awards will be given from 4-4:45 p.m.

Interactive activities such as a rock-climbing wall, mechanical bull, hayrides, pony rides and a petting zoo are available. The petting zoo will consist of goats, chickens, lamas, donkeys and sheep. There will also be ducklings and baby chicks exhibited. All these activities will be available from 12 p.m.-5 p.m.

The Ole’ West Gunfighters Show is a live interactive show where there are a group of cowboys in costume and in character. This is an interactive show that runs about an hour long. There will be photo opportunities for kids and families. Showtimes are 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The corn hole tournament will kick off at 1 p.m. This is a doubles tournament where you and a partner will have to sign up as a team. You can preregister by emailing taguirre@pleasantontx.gov or register onsite; however, preregistration is preferred.

The buy in is $20, and there will be a payout of $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place. The prize money was sponsored by The Gym.

The pig scramble will be at 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. This is a kid-only event with two age categories: 6-9-year-olds and 10-15-year-olds. The registration is onsite only and there is no cost for the registration. You can register from 10 a.m-1:45 p.m. A parent or a guardian must be present to sign the rules and regulations forms.

There will also be a lamb scramble available for children. Age requirements will be determined at the event depending on the size of lambs that are present. The contestant sign up will be onsite from 10 a.m.-1:45 p.m. and the scramble will be from 4-5 p.m.

The Texas Tone Rangers will also perform at the event from 4-6 p.m. They will provide the audience with live, country music.
