Welcome, Gabriella Ruiz

I ’m so excited to announce that the Pleasanton Express has hired a summer intern through the South Texas Press Association to report on summer news, features and events in Atascosa County.

Gabriella Ruiz, is a 20-year-old local Atascosa County resident who grew up in Charlotte and graduated in 2019. Gabi just finished her sophomore year at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi with a 4.0 GPA earning her a spot on the Dean’s List for the Spring 2021 semester and is majoring in journalism. She begins her junior year in August. Gabi interned for us during her senior year of high school in 2018-2019 reporting on CHS news and sports. Gabi is also a member of TAMU-CC’s newspaper staff, The Island Waves. This made choosing her as our STPA intern for the 2021 summer easy and well-worth it!

Before beginning her STPA internship with us, Gabi took part in a pristine 10-day Dow Jones internship from May 26-June 4. This internship was more like a semester’s worth of master’s program classes. Through this elite internship, Gabi learned from the top journalists in the state of Texas about headlines, micro and macro editing, Word- Press, how to put together a newspaper issue and more. She definitely got the crash course in journalism!

Gabi’s first day with us at the Pleasanton Express was last Thursday, June 10. She will be working directly under me on summer news and events this summer with direction and guidance from our whole team. That Thursday morning, we held our weekly editorial meeting at the office and caught Gabi up on all of the current news and what her assignments would be for the summer. After returning from a delicious lunch at The Backyard Kitchen in Poteet, we got down to business. In this week’s issue you’ll find stories by Gabi all throughout the Front and Living Sections of the newspaper including the Pleasanton City Pool, Parks and Rec summer programs and Poteet’s Summer Fun event. She is currently working on more stories so keep your eye out in coming issues!

I cannot tell you enough how excited I am to have Gabi working for us this summer! She is such a smart and talented human being, and I cannot wait for you to see what she brings to the table, Atascosa County!
