The McMullen Cowgirls kept their district title hopes alive with a four-set win at home over rival Three Rivers on Tuesday (25-10, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24).
Senior hitter Madison Sherrer led the way with 12 kills and three blocks in the win. Brenda Beyer had eight and Caroline McClaugherty finished with seven.
Beyer and McClaugherty combined for 31 assists in the win for McMullen.
Defense was big for the Cowgirls, who had three girls finish in double figures for digs. Alexis Ortiz led the way with 13. Taber Garcia had 12 and Chloe Taylor had 10.
McMullen (19-14, 8-2) are sitting firmly in second place in 31-2A two games behind no. 17-ranked Freer (23-7, 10-0) with six games left to play. The Cowgirls travel to Benavides this Friday.
Charlotte sweeps Bruni to keep playoff hopes alive
The Charlotte Trojanettes rebounded from Friday’s loss to McMullen by sweeping Bruni (25-23, 25-17, 26-24).
Mia Campos led the way with four kills, an ace and five digs. Jessalyn Sanchez matched her offensive output with four kills and posted four digs.
Mercedes Sanchez and Julissa Cantu combined for 15 assists in the win. Sanchez had the team-high of two aces in the win.
Charlotte (4-6 in 31-2A) entered the day tied with Agua Dulce for the fourth place playoff spot with Agua Dulce holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. Charlotte will head to district leader Freer this Friday.
