Veterans Day 5K in Poteet

There is no need to drive all the way to San Antonio on Veterans Day to honor those who served. The Poteet VFW Memorial Post 6970 will host their first ever 5K Walk/Run, on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Poteet Strawberry Festival grounds. You may register that day or go to Active.com and search Poteet 5K. The day of the event, registration opens at 7 a.m. and the walk/ run begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $25.

The course is wheelchair and stroller friendly. Friendly dogs are welcome, but please clean-up any messes. All profits will go to Train A Dog, Save A Warrior. This non-profit provides service dogs for veterans with PTSD.

There will be fun for everyone. Members of the National Wheelchair Fencing team will put on a demonstration and Alvin Cee, a professional body painter, will be doing face painting for the kids. There will be a DJ and as participants traverse the course, tables will not only help keep them hydrated with drinks, but will provide information about various wars in which our veterans have ensured our freedom and helped those fighting to gain their freedom.

The event will culminate at 11 a.m. when the VFW’s Honor Guard will raise the flag to honor our veterans. Veterans Day honors all our veterans, past and present, traditionally the flag is raised the 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour. All veterans, their families and anyone who owes their freedom to a veteran (everyone) is encouraged to attend the flag raising. We look forward to helping and honoring those who have given so much.
