Unemployment rate remains high, local businesses urgently seek employees

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Atascosa County’s unemployment rate fluctuated steadily between 3-4%, but in 2020, that rate reached a historic high for the first time in 30 years. According to the Texas Labor Market Information, Atascosa County saw a record high 10.7% unemployment rate in June 1992. In June 2020, the unemployment rate surpassed that with a 10.9% unemployment rate in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic.

Although it has since decreased, as of July 2021, Atascosa County’s unemployment rate sits at a high of 6.2% down from 7% in June. A total of 22,336 people are in the labor force. Of those, 20,925 are employed and 1,411 are unemployed. The unemployment rate for Atascosa County in 2021 so far has been 6.3 in May, 6.7 in April, 7.5 in March, 8.1 in February and 7.9 in January.

Workforce Solutions Alamo (WSA) has also released data for the Alamo region that includes Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, McMullen, Medina and Wilson Counties. WSA reports that the June unemployment rate for the eight-county San Antonio- New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is 6.0%, an increase of 0.7 percentage points over the month, from the May rate of 5.3%. The June unemployment rate is lower than the state’s not seasonally adjusted (actual) rate of 6.6%. The Texas not-seasonally adjusted (actual) unemployment rate had an increase of 0.70 percentage points over the month up from a rate of 5.9%. The state’s June unemployment rate stood 6.1 percentage points below the peak rate of 12.7 percent recorded in April 2020. Nationally, the U.S. not seasonally unadjusted (actual) unemployment rate increased to 6.1% in June, up from the 5.5% reported in May. The U.S. unemployment rate was 11.2% in June 2020. Since June 2020, the national unemployment rate dropped 5.1 percentage points.
