The McMullen County Sheriff’s Office had another encounter with undocumented immigrants on Wednesday.

Just after midnight on July 7, McMullen County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a white GMC Yukon on Highway 16 near FM 3445 for “defective equipment.” During the stop, deputies found the vehicle was being driven by a U.S. citizen and contained several undocumented immigrants.

While the MCSO was calling for additional units, eight suspected undocumented immigrants fled the scene on foot after an unsuccessful attempt to apprehend them.

The driver of the vehicle stayed and was eventually detained. After an investigation, 21-year-old Agustin Leon Duarte of Missouri City, Texas was arrested and booked into the Live Oak County Jail on a 3rd degree Felony Charge of Smuggling of Person.

Around 6 a.m., four individuals were spotted walking northbound on Highway 16 by another deputy. It was discovered that all four were undocumented immigrants that had fled on foot earlier in the morning. They were detained and turned over to Border Patrol. In total, three Honduran nationals and one Nicaraguan were apprehended with four others still out.

The investigation is still ongoing.
