It was perfect weather for the 5th Annual Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce Turn-n-Burn Barbeque Cook-off – and the pay-out was, too.

At the end of the day and while the winners were still being announced, money kept being added to the biggest pay-out in Texas and one of the largest in the nation – for an International Barbeque Cookers Association (IBCA) sanctioned BBQ Cook-off.

The total amount awarded was over $60,000. The 144 teams – 33 of them from Atascosa County – filled the Pleasanton River Park this year. Trailers, BBQ rigs and pop-ups claimed their places on Friday and the smoke started filling the air soon after.

Grand Champion prize went to Paul Carnell of PJs Roadhouse. Carnell, from League City, also won 2nd place for his Chicken and 8th place for Pork Spare Ribs with a total of 22 points. The trophy cup was sponsored by WESTERN Premium BBQ Products.

Bringing home Reserve Champion was Clint Swindall and his Good Life BBQ team. Swindall, from Bulverde, came in 3rd place with his Pork Spare Ribs and 8th place for Brisket with a total of 21 points.
