A success – that’s what the 6th annual Turn-n- Burn BBQ cookoff was deemed when the smoke cleared the air this past weekend.

The Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce reached their capacity of 200 teams. As they set up in the Pleasanton Riverpark, the forecast for rain didn’t dampen the spirits of any of the cooks.

This year’s event was once again the biggest pay-out in Texas and one of the largest in the nation – for an International Barbeque Cookers Association (IBCA) sanctioned BBQ Cook-off.

The total amount awarded was over $65,000. The 200 teams – 32 of them from Atascosa County – filled the Pleasanton River Park this year. There was only one team from out of state – Eric Thomas’ Rollin’ Grill team was from Georgia.

The rain started to fall during the Friday evening’s entertainment – a few die hard fans still showed up though the carnival did close up early.

The popular beer garden area provided shelter for those who stayed. On Saturday, when the sun came out, it was the coolest place to hang out, too.

When there are 200 teams with three types of meats, plenty of judges are needed. With the steady flow of people coming out to enjoy the day, there was no shortage of judges. Thanks to Dawn Mason and her able crew, the judging went as smooth as expected with 600 entries.

Winners

Grand Champion prize went to Wade Carpenter and his Los Slow Cookers team. Carpenter, from Uvalde, also won 1st place for his brisket. He also received five cases of beer from Glazer’s Distributors, a management hunt provided by Charco Redondo Whitetail Ranch ($3,500 value) and $700 added money from Double K Homes. Bringing home Reserve Champion was the Grillin’ Granny Angie Pruett. Pruett, from Grandbury, came in 1st place with her pork spare ribs, too. Not only were there some talented youngsters barbequeing at the Kid’sQueNation pork chop competition – 80 kids entered the contest – they had some adults who were winners as well when they started donating money left and right for scholarships for the winners.
