‘Tis the season

It’s hard to miss the holiday season, especially when stores have been filled with Christmas decorations since before Halloween was even here. I, like the few, am one of those who deco-rate for Christmas after Thanksgiving. You do you … I do me.

This time of year tends to make me sad, and I know I am not the only one. Don’t get me wrong, I love the holidays! But as jolly as they are with the bountiful food, colorful lights, many decora-tions, extravagant presents, family time and music, they are just not as exciting for me. People have their reasons: loss of a loved one, no family to celebrate with, a global pandemic, no money or my personal favorite … too much family (yes, I know how that sounds).

However, I am choosing joy this holiday season and I encourage you to do so, too. Whatever that may look like for you, do it for the pure joy of making yourself happy. If you are like me and the holiday season makes you sad or depressed, don’t just sit at home in the darkness as you scroll through social media seeing all of the “happy” families celebrating. Even if you don’t spend the holidays with other people, do something that you love or have always wanted to do. Go see the lights in downtown San Antonio, go to that festival, take a trip to the beach and listen to waves, go for a hike with your dogs … do something other than sit in your own sadness at home. Choose joy this holiday season. Nothing is more important than putting your happiness first.
