Oh goodness! It is that time of year again where all things strawberry will be served at the Poteet Strawberry Festival. And while the list rattles off much like Forrest Gump’s friend, Bubba Blue, talking about shrimp, there is so much more than these delicious berry treats!
While getting together the information for our special section I was typesetting the food booth list and it got my mouth watering for the tried and true items as well as the new ones.
I love festivals and the food that goes along with them. There is something I can’t quite describe about a gordita being eaten standing up with the insides – full of pico de gallo – spilling over.
One of the newest trends at festivals are the potato curls. Whoa! Those are some tasty things and the line is almost as long as the DAR funnel cake line!
And then there is the entertainment. When I first saw the line-up and Foghat was booked to play, I couldn’t believe it. They were the first concert I saw. Not including rodeo concerts … not attending with parents or adults … my first concert with my friends.
It was in Houston in 1976 or was it 1977? All I know for certain is that it was with my friend Christa and her new classmates from LaPorte. We sat near the speaker and afterwards, my ears rang for days! I’m not even sure if any of the original members are even alive – it has been 41 years or so.
When I mentioned it to my kids, my daughter-in-law Emily asked what songs did they sing. I broke out into “Slow Ride” and of course – being the cool chick – she remembered it.
And then there is Tanya Tucker. “Delta Dawn” anyone? Of course there is always tons to do at the festival – rodeo, strawberry judging, auction, food show, dancers, carnival, parade, high wire acts, arts and crafts and lots of music.
The festival association board of directors led by president Carlos Torres and the Festival Coordinator Carol Rivera and Assistant Anna Skurka see to it that all things are organized and come off smoothly.
The way I see it, I hope you are all planning on heading over to Poteet to join in the fun this weekend Friday – Sunday at the festival grounds off Hwy 16. Have fun and be safe!
