The Way I See It

The Golden Rule has been ugraded to the Platinum Rule®

I try to abide by the Golden Rule. You know, treat others they way you wish to be treated. Most times I am pretty successful .. sometimes I am not.

As a parent it is easier to practice. You want to set a good example for your children. (I always had a problem with the whole parental edict of “Don’t do as I do, do as I say” which reminded me more of a military setting than a home setting.) But I digress.

So, just when I get comfortable with the Golden Rule guideline, another is introduced.

It is called the “Platinum Rule®”. Yes. This has been copyrighted by Dr. Tony Alessandro, Ronald Finklestein and Scott Michael Zimmerman – small businesses gurus. They have devised a better version of the Golden Rule, so to speak. This rule is “treat others the way THEY would like to be treated” – hmmmmm. Sound complicated? Not really.

To treat others the way they would like to be treated is to first of all, know them. Now this may be hard to do while you are in the check-out line in a strange store or in the waiting room of a doctor’s office.

But a little understanding goes a long way. What if you were a surly, unhappy person. Treating others the way you are accustomed would not be so nice now, would it?

The way I see it, it is all about perspective. We respond to different behaviors.

Dr. Phil (I know, you either love him, or hate him) says it best.

You teach people how to treat you. So, choose to be treated with dignity and respect. Choose to be happy and productive.
