The Way I See It

Father knew best

Though my dad didn’t have us fetch his slippers or his pipe when he returned home after a long day at his job and we never called him father like they did on early TV shows, he was an “old school” era dad.

Dads these days are more hands on, and by that I mean really hands on. They actually change diapers, give baths and feed their young.

Well, maybe not all modern dads, but more now than in the days of my raising.

Oh, I absolutely knew my dad loved us. He provided for us, taught us how to drive, how to shoot guns (well, he tried to teach me), how to cut up chickens, how to refinish furniture and I can still replicate his barbecue sauce and his sop sauce.

I received only one spanking from my dad, and I totally deserved it. I was about six or so and had watched my older brothers back our car out of our carport many times with no key so we could ride our bicycles. You had to slip the stick shift until the “N” showed and then push. I still don’t know how I jumped in and steered it down the small incline. But my dad saw it and that is when he threw down the watering hose and ran towards me. His face was drawn and he did not look happy at all. So I did the normal thing. I got out of the car and ran away from him, right into the house, down the hall and slammed the bathroom door in his face and then … locked it. (Oh, I had that move down pat with two older brothers.) I did open the door when I heard his voice raise an octave.

The way I see it, I knew he genuinely loved me and was scared for me. He has been gone for 27 years, and I still miss him terribly. Remember to honor your dad this Sunday.
