The Way I See It

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst

The explosion tragedy of the fertilizer plant in West, Texas has affected many families, friends, students and citizens. Coming off the bombings in Boston, it leaves many wondering what would happen if a similar situation occurred locally. What happened in that small Texas community could happen anywhere in Atascosa County.

How we prepare and react can be done in advance.

Our local hospital, South Texas Regional Medical Center, has joined forces with the emergency personnel in our area to hold mock disasters. This training certainly helps in times of distress and dealing with the scenario that is planned.

But what about a true disaster?

Who do you contact? How long will it take for a response team to show up to assist?

On a personal level, how will you get in touch with your family members? And, yes, they want to hear from you ASAP!

I know we are taught to have a place to meet if our home was consumed with flames so that family doesn’t think someone is left inside. Do we still teach that to our own families?

How would you handle an emergency situation?

Here are just a few hints.

First of all, stay calm (or as calm as you can). Assess the situation and decide what needs to be done…. then do it, safely. Whether it is calling 9-1-1 then performing chest compressions, do something. Listen to the help on the other end of the phone. Don’t hang up, and again stay calm and be patient. Help is on the way.

The way I see it, when I’ve been involved in this type of situation, I seem to have an out-of-body experience. I can almost see how I’m reacting. Most times, it has paid off.
