The Way I See It

Naiveté politician, really?

Is there such a thing as a naive politician? I ask this because of what Texas Representative Molly White (Rep.-Belton) wrote on her Facebook wall last week in reference to a Muslim group visiting the State Capitol on January 29.

“Today is Texas Muslim Capital (sic) Day in Austin. The House is in recess until Monday. Most members including myself are back in district. I did leave an Israeli flag on the reception desk in my office with instructions to staff to ask representatives from the Muslim community to renounce Islamic terrorist groups and publicly announce allegiance to America and our laws. We will see how long they stay in my office.”

When she received a backlash for posting it, she told the Texas Tribune in an interview that she “never thought it was going to go viral. And I thought it was just to folks that were in my district. I didn’t know that there [were] fringe groups out there watching every word you say and things you do.”

Surely Rep. White, a 55-year-old freshman legislator, knows her way around Facebook/social media and how comments can be shared.

If not, I hope that her staff can catch her up to speed. The way I see it, there are extremists in every group – Muslim, Christitian, Democrats, Republicans, etc.

Lumping all in a certain group shows intolerance. We, as Americans – as Texans, are better than that.
