The Way I See It

Santas and such

While covering the Brush Country Christmas last Saturday I saw all the cute children in line waiting for their turn to see Santa.

While my attention was diverted to getting the chamber’s winners names written down, my boyfriend, Mark, was watching the kids when they actually got to Santa’s lap. Some were fine, but there were some who didn’t want any part of it. So what did the parents do? Just what most do….had the photo taken!

It got me thinking of my own kids and their visits with Santa. I’m sure there is a photo of me having to sit with Santa and a very teary-eyed toddler Allison and a smiling Daryl somewhere in our midst of old photos.

From the looks of their current state of mind, I don’t think they show any signs of trauma. There were no nightmares. No guilt trips laid on this pushy parent.

`But, in reality, I can see where young ones don’t dig the guy in the red suit (which is a CAUTION color) with a huge white beard and a loud laugh. Not to mention – he wears gloves and most times he isn’t outside. Who wears gloves? Of course, this may be a sanitary measure now that I think of it.

And think of this…unless you are exposed to a similar looking person on a frequent basis, it’d be like going to the circus and seeing clowns once a year. Stephen King’s “It” ruined clowns for me. Oh, and the clown doll from “Poltergeist”…. not good.

But I digress.

I guess when we parents approach Santa as a dear friend, over the years the kiddos get used to seeing him and accept him….beard and all. Of course when they realize he brings them all sorts of wonderful toys, who wouldn’t love the guy?

The way I see it, I’m sure more children will be taken to visit the holly, jolly guy and even if they are wary of the large beard, belly and laugh, they will be grateful to see these photos years later.
