Young bakers ages 5 to 18 participated in the 2021 Taste of Texas Food Show on Sunday, April 11 at the Poteet Rotary Club Pavilion. This Poteet Strawberry Festival event blossomed winners from such categories as all cakes, cheesecakes, all cookies and candies, yeast breads and quick breads and pies. After the judging, 26 of the delectable delights went on to be sold in the auction later that day.
Berry Best of Show winner Connor Sparks, son of Megan Sparks, said, “I entered because I like baking and I wanted to have fun and win.” And win he did, with his Strawberry Cheesecake with Oreo Cookie Crust.
Best in Show was a Strawberry Angel Fruit Cake made by Kayli Kennedy, daughter of Poteet FFA Advisor Jeff Kennedy and Stacey Kennedy. Kennedy was inspired to enter her dessert for the food show by the rave reviews she received from her family after making it for her sister’s birthday.
“The family really enjoyed it, so it was what I wanted to make for the Taste of Texas Food Show,”
Kennedy said. “I was really amazed that it won. I knew it tasted good, but didn’t know how good it was.”
