Sul Ross Rio Grande Campus Faculty Senate Endorses SB 522

Today, State Senator Roland Gutierrez (D-Bexar County) announced that the faculty Senate of Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College passed a resolution endorsing his Senate Bill 522, which would transfer the struggling university from the Texas State University System where it has languished for many years to the Texas A&M University System which has a very recent history of turning around struggling institutions.

Senator Gutierrez stated, “This is big news, for sure. These are the folks who know that institution the best. Collectively they have hundreds of years of experience and it is encouraging to earn their support.”

Among other things, the resolution references the pattern of declining enrollment and lack of attention from the Texas State System–reiterating many of the same points Senator Gutierrez has repeatedly made since first filing the legislation at the beginning of this legislative session.

Gutierrez concluded, “We are just at the beginning of this process, but it is exciting to see how much support we’ve built in a very short period of time. The faculty are going to be key to a successful turn around and I want to make sure they have all the support they need.”
