Stolen truck leads chase on county roads

A report of a vehicle stolen in Christine led to a high speed pursuit by sheriff’s deputies Sunday morning. Sergeant Deputy Paul Schneider and Deputy George Lopez responded to Christine around 9:15 a.m. after family members reported a 1993 Dodge truck being stolen to Dispatcher Leonard Lozano. The deputies intercepted the vehicle on County Road 422 between Christine and Jourdanton and the driver refused to stop. Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward said his deputies pursued the vehicle into Jourdanton where Jourdanton PD Officer Joel Chavez joined the pursuit. The driver led the officers to the parking lot of the Atascosa County Jail where he stopped and attempted to flee on foot. The officers chased down the suspect and took him into custody after a brief struggle.

Charged with Evading Arrest with a Vehicle and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle was Benjamin Joseph Gonzales, 36, P.O. Box 251, Christine. Gonzales was booked into the Atascosa County Jail where bond was set at $30,000 by Justice of the Peace Orlando Carrasco.
