The Jourdanton girls basketball team ended 2017 on a perfect note.
The Squaws brought home the Universal City Randolph tournament championship last week, completing a 4-0 run at the two-day competition.
Jourdanton defeated the host Lady Ro-Hawks 52-29 on Friday in the final game. The win capped a dominant performance by the Squaws, who won each tournament matchup by an average of 23.3 points.
Jourdanton’s Mayce Marek was named the tournament MVP after averaging 10 points and eight rebounds.
Cladi Muñoz and Laney Korus also made the all-tournament team.
In addition, Karen Carrasco won the tournament’s 3-point competition with 19 made 3-pointers.
Against Randolph, Korus had a team-high 14 points, six steals and four rebounds. Destiny Powell added 13 points and six rebounds.
Earlier Friday, the Squaws beat Schertz John Paul 57-34. Five players—Muñoz, Powell, Serah Kate Blair, Erin Soward and Vanessa Vacca—scored eight points for Jourdanton. Marek had a game-high 10 points.
Soward led the team with eight rebounds, and Marek added six. Korus and Powell each had four.
Powell and Korus also each had four steals. In all, the Squaws forced 17 steals against John Paul.
The tournament began Thursday, and Jourdanton beat Johnson City 43-28 and Crystal City 67-35 to kick off the competition.
Against the Lady Javelinas, three Squaws scored in double figures.
Soward led the team with 12 points, while Powell (11) and Marek (10) also made it to double digits.
Soward and Powell each had three rebounds to lead Jourdanton.
Marek had a team-high four steals.
