The Jourdanton Squaws finished last week on a three-game win streak after a pair of wins in District 30-3A.

The Squaws, now 3-0 in district play, took down Lytle 57-40 on Tuesday, Jan. 14, before dominating Laredo Harmony 75- 12 at home on Friday.

Jourdanton overcame a small 29-28 halftime deficit to beat Lytle.

The wins help the Squaws in their quest for a second-straight district title.

“It gives us a really good feeling,” Gwyn Wells said of the start in district. “It encourages us to keep the district title from last year.”

The wins came from the Squaws sharing the ball. Shyanne Bauerle finished the Lytle game with a team-high 24 points while Wells had 13.

In Friday’s romp over Harmony, the Squaws did more of the same and finished with every player in uniform scoring and four players finishing in double figures. Wells joined Vanessa Vacca and Emma Dorroh as the teamhigh scorers with 16 points Friday night. Emma Roach had 11 points.

Seeing ball movement like that this early in the district schedule is encouraging for Head Coach Ariana Foster.

“We were down a couple girls. We had a bunch of players step up,” Foster said. “We had two of our freshman play practically the whole time [Friday night] and just step up and show us why they are on the team, why they deserve to be on the team. We had seniors show their leadership, being able to lead from the court and on the side as well.”

The players also felt the boost following Friday’s win. It helps them maintain confidence from game to game.

“It’s such a big accomplishment because it boosts our confidence to the next district games that we’re gonna have,” Roach said. “We know everybody’s gonna score.”

The Squaws were also able to flex their muscle in the win over Harmony.

Jourdanton jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter and closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 24-4 lead. They then used a 21-2 run in the second quarter to take a 45-6 lead into halftime.

Doing that with two freshmen on the floor is just the tip of the iceberg for what the Squaws can do, they say.

“It’s a really big sign because we have two freshmen on the team and it builds their confidence,” Wells said.

Jourdanton (11-9, 3-0) hosted Cotulla on Tuesday, Jan. 21, before traveling to Natalia on Friday, Jan. 24.
