Squaws ready for another season




The Jourdanton Squaws are hyped about the upcoming season, under 4th year Head Coach Doug Lum. Coming off 5th place in district last season, the Squaws are hopeful in mak­ing the play­offs this season. Jour­danton will have plenty of experi­enced players back on the court along with seven new faces.

Coach Lum returns to lead the Squaws once again this year. He is hopeful in improving their record from last year, which was 9-18 overall and 5-9 in dis­trict play. While coaching the Big Red Coach Lum ac­counted for a 42-38 record, which equals to an overall record of 109-79 as a head coach.

Who is back for Jourdan­ton? The Squaws are going to be returning seven skilled basketball players this season. They return the following athletes: Tori Bautista-Sr-Forward, Cassandra Reyes-Jr-Guard, Darrian Willsher-Sr- Forward, Kyanna Floyd-Jr- Guard, Priya Camacho-Sr. Guard, Gabby Gonzalez-Sr- Point and Tristan Velas­quez Jr-Guard.

Looking forward- Once again this season Jourdan­ton will not catch a break as they compete against some very talented teams.

Offensively Jourdanton will stick to their strategy of Flex offense and man to man defense.

The Squaws opened their season with a scrimmage at home against Charlotte and a scrimmage in Poteet.

Sched­ule Out­look The Squaws opened their season on the road last Tuesday, Novem­ber 6th against Karnes City. Karnes City defeated the Squaws 63-25. The top two scoring athletes were Cassandra Reyes with 9 points and Tristian Velasquez with 5 points. The Jourdanton Squaws took on the Hondo Owls on Friday, No­vember 9th. The Squaws fell to the owls 70-39. Jourdanton stands 0-2 overall.

Non-District opponents this season will include dates with Karnes City, Three Rivers, Kenedy, Stockdale, Pearsall, Poteet and Dilley.

This season Jourdanton will compete in their own tourney with teams to include Stockdale, St. Anthony, Poteet and Somerset.

District play will include Brooks Academy, Randolph, Natalia, Marion, Cole, Cotulla and Dilley. The last time the Squaws advanced to the 2-A girls basketball playoffs was in the 2009-2010 season. They fell to the San Diego Lady Vaqueros in the Bi-District Playoffs.
