Jourdanton’s volleyball team scored clutch points at the net for a close home win.
The Squaws (10-15) earned a nailbiter home victory, 16-25, 28-26, 21- 25, 25-12, 15-13, against George West on Sept. 7.
Jourdanton head coach Joella Gaellegos said the keys to victory were “being able to serve a little tougher and, defensively, getting some good digs and turning them into points.”
Gallegos said the team showed much more confidence than in five-set losses against Poteet and Bandera.
“We were tired of losing close matches and knowing that we were capable of winning them. We just didn’t want it to slip by us tonight,” she said.
Jourdanton and George West traded points in the second set until Nicole Zuhlke scored on a tip and a George West player hit the ball into the net to end it.
Jourdanton gained a 20-19 lead in the third set, but George West won six of the last seven points.
The Squaws started the fourth set 7-2 and took the last six points.
The two teams went back and forth in the fifth set until Sidney Morneau and Erin Soward lined up for a block and then Soward spiked the game-ending kill.
Jourdanton played two matches at Hondo on Sept. 11. First, the Squaws lost 20-25, 25-10, 14-25, 25-21, 10-15 to San Antonio Randolph.
The Squaws are now 3-3 in matches that have lasted the maximum number of sets.
Later in the evening, Jourdanton lost 16-25, 21-25 against Hondo in a match that was shortened due to time.
Jourdanton’s next game will be a district match on Sept. 18 at home against Lytle, with the varsity scheduled to hit the floor at 7 p.m.
