SOFTBALL: Lady Eagles open season behind Bond’s no-hitter

The Pleasanton Lady Eagle softball team kicked off their 2020 campaign in incredible fashion.

Pleasanton beat Crystal City 15-0 in three innings on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Pitcher Emma Bond picked up a no-hitter and four strikeouts to go along with the winning decision.

Korin Ramos led the way for the Lady Eagles by going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and a triple.

The Lady Eagles then continued the week of play at the Somerset tournament Feb. 20-22.

Pleasanton opened the tournament with an 11-0 loss in three innings to Pearsall on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Bond was charged with the loss. Ramos and Mackinzy Curbow each went 1-for-2.

The Lady Eagles picked up play the next day with a 12-9 win over San Antonio Highlands in three innings.

Pleasanton used nine runs in the top of the first inning to jump out in front before having to stave off a comeback from Highlands, who scored five runs in the bottom of the second.

Bond picked up the win for Pleasanton in the pitching circle. Tatum Standley was 2-for-3 and Ramos was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a triple.

Pleasanton then tied with the hosts Somerset 10-10 in a game that was called in the fourth inning after reaching the time limit.

The Lady Eagles led 10-3 entering the bottom of the third before Somerset plated seven runs in the final two frames.

Autumn Guerra was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Aurianna Rich finished 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a double.

The Lady Eagles closed out the weekend with a pair of losses on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Pleasanton fell to Natalia, 13-4, in the first game of the day.

The Lady Eagles led 2-1 after the first inning thanks to a two-run inside-the-park home run from Ramos before a two-run home run put Natalia up 4-2 in the third inning.

Bond (2-2) was charged with the loss. Ramos was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a home run and two RBIs. Rich went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.

The Lady Eagles fell to La Vernia 4-1 in their final game on Saturday.

Curbow took the loss in the circle for Pleasanton. Ramos and Taylor Bryant each went 1-for-2 at the plate.

Ramos and Guerra were named to the All-Tournament team.

Squaws open season with gauntlet

The Jourdanton Squaws opened their season with a gauntlet of a first week, going 1-5-1 against state-ranked teams and opponents in Classes 6A and 5A.

The Squaws kicked off the season on Monday, Feb. 17, with a 5-0 loss to Class 2A no. 2 Shiner.

Lexi Wheeler and Kasandra Garcia picked up the only two hits for the Squaws in their first game under new Head Coach Lexi Smith.

Wheeler also took the loss in the circle after allowing five runs on eight hits, but also striking out 11 batters.

Jourdanton then traveled to the NFCA Texas High School Leadoff Classic at three different sites between College Station, Franklin and Tomball.

The Squaws opened the tournament with an 8-1 loss to Hunstville on Thursday, Feb. 20. Jourdanton managed two hits in the loss.

Lexi Wheeler was the pitcher of record for Jourdanton, going 3-1/3 innings and allowing eight runs on four hits.

Gwyn Wells was 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI. Mia Lopez also went 1-for-2 against Huntsville.

Jourdanton wrapped up the opening day of the tournament with a 5-1 loss to Brandeis.

McKinley West was charged with the loss for the Squaws after going 4-1/3 innings and allowing five runs on six hits.

Allie Wheeler was 2-for-2 at the plate. Allie Touchstone was 1-for-3, as well. Emma Dorroh was 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk and an RBI.

The Squaws then tied with Beeville Jones 6-6 to open play on Friday, Feb. 21.

Garcia was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two doubles. Dorroh and Bailey Lemes were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lemes also had a triple.

After dropping their game to Fort Bend Elkins, the Squaws notched their first win of the season in a 5-2 result over San Antonio Johnson.

Lexi Wheeler took the win after allowing two runs on three hits and striking out six batters.

Dorroh was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Mikayla Pargeter was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Lopez was 1-for-2 with an RBI as well.

The Squaws closed out the tournament with a 10-5 loss to McKinney Boyd on Saturday.

Dorroh and Lopez went 2-for-3. Lexi Wheeler and Lemes each had an RBI.

Lady Aggies cap home tournament with walk-off

After dropping their first three games at their home tournament, the Poteet Lady Aggies walked off with their first win of the new season.

Poteet beat Carrizo Springs 8-7 on a walk-off, RBI single from junior left fielder Brooke Rasmussen.

Rasmussen finished the game 1-for-2 with that RBI. Five Lady Aggies each had a hit in the win.

The Lady Aggies (1-3) lost 5-0 to Cotulla, 8-4 to Laredo Nixon and 6-5 to La Pryor in their previous three games.

Stevani Monreal finished the tournament 3-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored.
