There is a lot for the City of Pleasanton to be proud of that help make its mark on maps and it’s not just big, successful events, but its shaping of young minds who have the opportunity to live and learn in such a tight knit community.

Mallory Sorola, a PHS ‘16 graduate, is currently stationed in Pensacola, FL with a command that teaches future information warriors the skills required to defend America around the world.

“I wasn’t doing anything meaningful or worthwhile with my life after graduation,” said Sorola. “I tried the whole college thing, but it just wasn’t for me or the right time.”

Sorola feels she is doing her civic duty having chosen to join the Navy.

“I wanted to give back to my country and choose my own path,” she said.

When asked how she chose to join this particular military branch, she commented on the feeling she received when speaking to them.

“I just knew I would be taken care of no matter what with this branch. I told myself, this is what I need to do, where I need to be. I get to choose what career I want to pursue and am guaranteed to stay on that path even when I’m out of the service.”

Sorola is a cryptologic technician and is responsible for analyzing electronic communications, jamming enemy radar signals, deciphering information in foreign languages and maintaining equipment and networks used to generate top secret Intel.

She never once thought about joining the military while in high school, but credits her successes to her hometown roots of Pleasanton.

“I’m proud of my roots and everything I learned from there,” she said.

“My morals were developed from Pleasanton. How to be humble, do what’s right, stand up to those who are doing wrong. You learn that living in a small town.”

Sorola is stationed at IWTC Corry Station in Pensacola, just one component that makes up the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) domain in which they lead, manage and deliver Navy and joint force training to about 22,000 students per year.

She also encourages those from her hometown and the youth from all over to not be afraid in whatever you do in life.

“Don’t expect to know what you want to do with your life right away. It’s okay,” she said.

“Whatever you do, do it wholeheartedly. If you set your mind to it, you can accomplish it. The fear is only temporary.”

Not only did she credit her hometown to her successes, but also her parents and God.

“My parents taught me everything I know in life and were my constant encouragers. My love for God taught me to not be timid or afraid. They have each been my rock throughout my life.”

Hometown pride goes a long way and Pleasanton has found its way to Pensacola with Sorola doing her civic duty in the US Navy.

Her proud family includes parents Debbie and Mike Sorola, and brothers Mike Jr. and Mark Sorola of Leming.
