Madison Sherrer, 2020 graduate of McMullen County ISD, will receive her American FFA Degree in early 2022. Sherrer is the daughter of Casey and Marty Soward, of Tilden, and Payton and Danna Sherrer, of Odem.

After moving to Tilden in the fifth grade, Sherrer became involved in the McMullen County Livestock Shows, and the ag life, as soon as she could, raising rabbits in junior high and broilers in high school.

“I started getting involved when I moved to Tilden,” Sherrer said. “So going into junior high, I was involved in 4-H and then when I got into high school, I moved up to FFA. And I did the livestock show from junior high, throughout high school.”

Also active in sports— basketball, volleyball, and track and field—UIL, One Act Play and National Honor Society in high school, Sherrer still found time to be actively involved in community service, which is one of the requirements for obtaining the American FFA Degree.

Sherrer volunteered for Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church-Odem for two consecutive summers, where she guided groups of children and assisted them during activities.

At Christmastime, she helped out with a Christmas project that raised funds used to purchase gifts for children who came from families who couldn’t afford them.

Another project included a clothing drive held by her class for the South Texas Children’s Home. After the collection was conducted at her school, Sherrer was among those who volunteered to pack up the donated clothing and deliver them to the home.

Evident in her volunteer work and in her future career plans, Sherrer has an obvious love for working with children—whether it’s providing for their physical, spiritual or emotional needs.

“I want to work with children as a pediatric psychologist and most likely in a hospital setting,” Sherrer said. A junior at Texas A&M-College Station, she is majoring in Psychology. Sherrer also loves to read, go hiking and spend as much time as she can outside.
