Sheriff reports over $100K in inmate housing income

During the Oct. 4 Atascosa County Commissioners Court meeting, ACSO Sheriff David Soward gave a presentation regarding out-of-county inmate housing income. For the months of May, June and July 2021, the Atascosa County Jail brought in a total of $115,850 from housing inmates from Kendall, Hays and McMullen Counties.

Payment for housing out-of-county inmates is calculated on a daily basis. Atascosa County contracts inmates from counties including Hayes, Comal, Kendall and Mc- Mullen as well as the US Airforce joint military base in San Antonio. Revenue from out-of-county inmates in the Atascosa County Jail is a planned revenue stream the county considered when planning the bonds for the jail expansion years ago.
