Sandra Marie Steele, 64, of Poteet, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on July 17, 2021. She was born on September 1, 1956, in Manassas, Virginia to Stanley Kenneth Payne and Evelyn Marie (Suthard) Payne.
Sandra was always a natural caretaker and while Julius was in active service, she became the military wives “mom.” Although she was not much older than the other ladies, she just naturally fell into that role when they needed support and care. Even after service was over, she somehow continued to be a second mom to many others throughout the years and was lovingly referred to as “Punkin” by those close to her. Sandra was a precious individual, but she could also be meaner than a rattlesnake with a spitfire personality. Maybe that came with age. Nonetheless, she loved her children, grandchildren and her great-grandchildren fiercely. She was a selfproclaimed food critic and loved getting in the kitchen with her family and cooking up food.
She is preceded in death by her parents Stanley and Evelyn Payne and sister Roberta Fern Smith.
Sandra is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 46 years Julius Steele; son Michael Curtis Steele, his wife Maria Isabel and their children Isaac Michael, McKenzie Pre and Samuel Austin; daughter Jennifer Lynn Steele and her children Taylor Danielle, Miranda Elizabeth, James Adrian, Cole Edward and Shelby Lynn; son Travis Wayne Steele, his wife Leticia, their children Jaclyn Rae (her children Greenleigh Seraphina and a baby boy on the way), Joni Reanea (her children Isaiah Travis and Lestat Aragon), and Anais Marie; Victoria Diana Marie Steele and her children Troy Alexander, Clayton “Olliepop” and Christopher Michael; brothers Stanley Kenneth Smith and his wife Theda, Joseph Charles Smith, and Jerry Edward Smith and his wife Sabrina; sister Elsie Jane Carlyle and her husband Sylvan; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to Hurley Funeral Home for funeral expenses.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., the reciting of the rosary will begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. All services will be in the chapel at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton.
