POTEET—The Poteet girls basketball team couldn’t keep up with San Antonio Harlandale last week.
The Lady Aggies stayed within striking distance for a half Friday, but the Lady Indians pulled away for a 48-29 non-district win over the hosts. Poteet trailed 12-10 after the first quarter and 23-15 at halftime before Harlandale opened up its lead.
The Lady Aggies pulled within 13-12 on a basket by Bella De La Garza in the second quarter, but the Lady Indians used three consecutive fast break layups to force a Poteet timeout midway through the period. The Lady Aggies had trouble dealing with Harlandale’s press defense, which limited Poteet to eight points in the second and third quarters combined.
By then the Lady Indians held a 37-18 lead and cruised through the final period.
Emily Zavala led the Lady Aggies with six points, and Chelsea Martinez added five. Jasmine Oliva and D’andra Calhoun each scored four points.
Sophomore Hannah Watts had a team-high six rebounds. Calhoun and Natalie Lozano each brought down four boards. Calhoun also had three assists and two steals. Lozano led the team with three steals.
Freshman Kayli Kennedy had three boards, as did Danielle Howell, who added an assist and a steal.
Poteet (6-13 overall) played its final game before district Tuesday against Cotulla. The Lady Aggies open District 30-4A play Friday at home versus Cuero.
