Runners remember 9/11 at Patriot Day 5K

100 competitors converge to run at Pleasanton’s River Park last Saturday

Patriot Day 5K in the Park hosted by the City of Pleasanton and the Pleasanton Express registered 100 plus runners for this inaugural race held at the Pleasanton River Park. The 5K and one-mile walk was designed to honor those lost in 9/11 and to recognize local first responders who daily serve and protect. The race was sponsored by Price Chevrolet Hurley Funeral Homes, Inc. Security State Bank, Wigington Rumley Dunn and Blair, PC Air, RB Printing & Office Supplies (Mrs. Barbara Peeler) and Country Girl Designs.

Pleasanton JROTC, led by Col. Wynder had 11 runners and 16 volunteers who helped with the event.

The Pleasanton Church of Christ volunteered to cook for the runners. The Atascosa County Running Club who always puts the fun into a run showed up in full support. Bush’s Chicken made a stop by the Pleasanton River Park to donate water and tea.

The race took place on a beautiful September eve with Camden Schmitz earning the spot of overall male winner with a time of 19:24.5. Local town favorite runner Nicole Brauchle was the overall female winner with a time of 23:06.5

An awards ceremony was held and race host- Tony Garcia MC’d the event announcing the following winners in eight age brackets. The youngest runner was 9 years old and the oldest was 78.
