Robert “Bob” Y. Wheeler, born to Carroll and Margueritte “Honey” Wheeler, on November 21, 1929, passed away April 15, 2017, in Tilden.

  1. attended grade school in Tilden and graduated high school from Texas Military Institute in San Antonio in 1944. He then served in the Armed Forces during World War II. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Bob received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 and a law degree in 1954, both from The University of Texas. Upon graduating from law school, Bob served three terms in the Texas State Legislature from 1954 – 1960, representing McMullen and surrounding counties.

Bob is survived by his wife of many years, Ellen Crowley, and numerous cousins. Bob was a loyal friend, making many over the years. A student of history, he and his wife were enthusiastic world travelers, exploring all seven continents. Bob was an avid reader, consuming several newspapers from cover to cover each day, was a historian on World War II matters, and an ardent follower of politics.

Honorary pallbearers are J. Earl Wheeler, Jr., Paul Peeler, Dave Crowley, Bob Humphries, Joe Quintanilla, and Donnie Haynes.

Visitation will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in State Room “B” in Pleasanton on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 from 3 – 7 p.m., with family receiving friends from 3 – p.m. A graveside service will be at Hilltop Cemetery in Tilden on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the McMullen County Historical Commission.
