Road trippin’ and singin’

The Way I See It

I’ve been on a few road trips lately and have been listening to Sirius

Radio on the way. My beau typically has it tuned to Oldies and 60s- 70s. Many of these songs we enjoy singing along. And then there are those that I only know one line or maybe the chorus.

I mused that I knew the “K-Tel” version of many songs. Those of you 60 years and older (there may be a few of you who are younger that may fall into this group, too) may remember the really lame infomercials on TV that tried selling you records, 8 tracks and cassette tapes of popular music. They would tease you with a portion of the song and move right along to another – hence my “K-Tel” moniker. I’m fondly remembering the tag lines they would say to get you to purchase their wares … “Who could forget the sounds of (fill in the blank)?” and “But, wait … there’s more!” or the ending “Call now before midnight. Operators are standing by!” But I digress.

We had dinner the other night with friends and one of them mentioned the only song of which he knew all the lyrics was “Tequila” (for those unsure, the title IS also the lyrics of the song).

I started thinking of songs which I know ALL the lyrics. There aren’t many, but aside from a few lullabies, Christmas carols and hymns – I think the only song that I could sing/write down all of the lyrics to right now would be Gary P. Nunn’s “London Homesick Blues” or the Armadillo Song – which was the theme song for PBS’s Austin City Limits show for 27 years. There could be worse songs, right?

Now, my guy, Dennis … he knows tons of lyrics. He was a member of the Chordsmen in Florida and has recently joined the San Antonio group. They HAVE to have a certain repertoire of songs memorized. Plus, he knows more than just those. In fact, he sings along with almost every song that comes on and does it very well! Me? Not so much, but

TheI try. way I see it, traveling around, singing (even off key) and enjoying the journey as much as getting to your destination is a really good thing. Hoping you all can experience a bit of that – with or without singing.
