Pegged as the “richest open rodeo in Texas,” the Pleasanton Young Farmers aren’t kidding with $17,500 added money for this year’s Cowboy of the Year Open Rodeo next month, Friday and Saturday, August 14-15.

Competitive events are: Ranch Bronc Riding ($75 entry fee)- includes $2,000 added money plus a saddle; Team Roping ($100 per man entry fee) – includes $5,000 added money plus buckles; Calf Roping ($75 entry fee)- include $2,500 added money plus buckles; Breakaway Ladies ($75 entry fee)- includes $2,000 added money plus buckles; Barrel Race Ladies ($75 entry fee) – includes $2,500 plus buckes; Bull riding ($100 entry fee)- includes $2,500 added money plus buckles and Open Breakaway ($75 entry fee) – includes $500 plus buckles.

The All-Around winners will also win a saddle.

Books will open Sunday, August 9 with timed events 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. Rough Stock will open on Monday, August 10 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m., Timed Events 2 p.m.-10 p.m. with limited entries. Slack will be held Thursday night, August 13 at 7:30 (only timed events).

County and area team roping will be held the weekend before, August 8 and 9. The roping books will open on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and #10 Draw Pot will open on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The rodeos are held at the Atascosa County Showbarn Arena, 2209 West Oaklawn, Pleasanton. Admission will be $10, $5 for children 6-12. Children under five are free.

Cowboy of the Year, Hall of Fame

The announcement of the 2015 Working Cowboy of the Year and South Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee(s) will be made before the Friday night performance, August 14 at 7 p.m.

Entertainment

After both rodeos, bands will take the stage to entertain the crowd even more.

Friday night’s entertainment will feature J. B. and the Moonshine Band.

On Saturday, Cory Morrow will take the stage with Sunny Sweeney opening.

Barbeque cook-off, washers

Planned again for this

year is an IBCA sanctioned BBQ cook-off and washer contest.

Entry fees for all three meats will be $150 with 80 percent payout. Beans entry fee is $20 with 100 percent payout.

Turn in times will be as follows: Beans – 11 a.m.; Chicken – noon; Ribs – 1:30 p.m.; Brisket – 3 p.m.

Head Cook meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Meat inspection will be on Friday.

Judges will be needed in all categories and can show up at 11 a.m. to help.
