RAYMOND PENROD


 

 

Raymond Lee Penrod, died peacefully at home in San Antonio in the early hours of October 30, 2018 at the age of 92.

Raymond was born in 1926 in West Plains, Missouri to Ray Wallace, and Bessie Lee Bennett. He was married in 1947 in West Plains, Missouri to Thelma Jean Nevill.

Raymond is preceded in death by his father, Ray Wallace; mother, Bessie Lee Bennett; sister, Erma Jean Bekebrock of Lamar, Missouri; and daughter, Patricia Kay Mullins of San Antonio.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Jean Nevill; and his son, Michael Raymond Penrod and wife Susan of San Antonio; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Upon graduation from high school in West Plains, Missouri in 1944, Raymond joined the US Navy serving during WWII as Carpenter’s Mate 3rd Class and aide to Admiral “Bull” Halsey, Commander of the South Pacific. After the Navy, Raymond opened a shoe repair shop in West Plains and served as Sergeant 1st Class in President Truman’s unit of the Missouri Army National Guard. As the Korean War broke out, he volunteered for active service in the US Army, Seventh Cavalry, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon discharge Raymond began a career spanning 38 years with the Frisco and Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a 70 Master Mason and a Noble of the Shrine where he was a leader of the Mini Wheels unit.

Funeral will be held November 14, 11 a.m., at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, 208 W Bandera Rd., Boerne with interment immediately following at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are grandsons, Sean and Luke Penrod; nephews, Merle and Stan Nevill; Tony Santa Cruz; and Ed McClure.

The family asks that memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.
