Poteet’s volleyball team lost its opener to Feast Homeschool 25-17, 25-12, 25-16 at home on Aug. 6.
“It showed us what we really need to work on,” said Poteet head coach Christine Smyers. “We need to work on serving and serve receive.”
Smyers said the team missed too many serves and that its offense struggled.
“[Feast] just ran the net so fast that we just did not do a good job keeping up,” she said.
The Aggies faced an early 9-1 deficit in the first set and were unable to close the gap after trailing 15-8 midway through the set. Poteet trailed 16-9 in the second set before Feast claimed nine of the last 12 points. The third set started more closely as Poteet was behind only 14-10 before Feast finished with an 11-6 advantage.
“They are very talented. We’re talented. We just haven’t put it together yet. I’m new and it’s a change of system for [the players],” Smyers said. “We’re going to get there fundamentally.”
Smyers added that Poteet is catching up to teams that have had more practice time. She called the Aug. 8 matchup against St. Anthony a hard matchup. She said the Harlandale tournament, which is Aug. 10 and 11, will help the team.
“I think the tournament will help us settle down,” she said.
