The Poteet ISD Tax Ratification Election passed last Saturday. Voters cast 319 ballots in favor and 137 against. Total voter turnout was around ten percent. Poteet ISD has a total of around 4,581 registered voters.
By approving the ad valorem tax rate of $1.549 per $100 valuation, the school district will be able to move 13 cents from the Bonded Indebtedness Tax Rate to the Maintenance and Operating Tax Rate. This will generate an additional $1,000,000 in revenue that will then provide competitive salaries to retain and attract highly qualified employees, salary increases for all staff and to add new programs including ROTC for the high school, Headstart at the elementary and an additional police officer.
This will not cost the taxpayers anything extra. It will decrease the Interest and Sinking tax rate the same amount as the proposed increases for the Maintenance and Operation rate.
Poteet ISD Superintendent Andy Castillo commented, “We are appreciative of the voters who came out to support this. We can remain competitive with surrounding schools. It is a good thing for our teachers and for our kids.”
