Watching the final seconds tick away, Poteet players surprised Head Coach Darby House with a Gatorade shower.

The Aggies came out on top against crosstown rival Jourdanton for the first time in their last eight meetings. After scoring in the final three minutes to go up 27-25, Poteet’s defense managed to record back to back stops to seal the victory.
The win improved Poteet to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in district 14-3A. Jourdanton moved to 3-4 and 2-1 in district play. With first place in district on the line, House emphasized the importance of the win against their rival.
“It’s a monkey off our back,” House said. “No matter how good we are or no matter what happens with either team, this is a rivalry game. It’s going to be a hard contested dogfight year in and year out. That’s one thing you can expect and we’re glad we won.”
After going up 21-7 in the first quarter, the Aggies were slowed down by Jourdanton’s defense. The Indians forced multiple turnovers and were able to convert them into points. With three minutes left in the first half, Jourdanton forced a fumble on a fourth and goal. Jordan Castillo picked the ball up and ran it back 98 yards to cut Poteet’s lead to 21-19 at the half.
Each team traded possessions back and forth during the second half. With 8:13 left in the game, Jourdanton took their first lead off a catch from Luke Tapp in the corner of the endzone. Tapp finished the game with three touchdowns.
As Poteet’s offense was unable to respond, their defense answered the call. With less than four minutes remaining, the Aggies blocked a punt and recovered the ball on the Indian’s two yard line. Just a few plays later, Davila found the endzone for the third time.
“All year our defense has done a great job,” House said. “I’m so proud and so lucky to have Coach Valerio as my Defensive Coordinator. He gets them playing every week and he does just as much as I do. These guys respond well and they love them and we did a great job. We played our hearts out.”
In addition to scoring a touchdown, Poteet’s Martin Ibarra recorded an interception to help close out the game. Throughout the game, Jourdanton tested the Aggies secondary by throwing the deep ball.
“This means a lot to us,” Ibarra said. “We’ve been working our butts off every day of practice. We had a couple mistakes in the first half but we’re a second half team and we were able to come through with the win.”
