With their sights set on a district title, Pleasanton and La Vernia both brought the intensity to the floor in a showdown Friday night.
For the second time this season, the Eagles were unable to get past La Vernia. Despite having an impressive 32-4 record, Pleasanton now sits at second in district 27-4A.
Though the match ended in a sweep, the two teams were just separated by a few points each set (25-21, 25-22, 33-31).
After falling behind in the first set, Pleasanton was unable to take control of the match. Despite leading the majority of the second set, La Vernia always had an answer for the Eagles. Pleasanton had multiple opportunities in the third set to extend the match, but were unable to behind a couple of errors.
Earlier in the week, Pleasanton swept Cuero (25-18, 25-17, 25-14) at home. Junior Victoria Urbanczyk led the team in kills with 11 in addition to her 13 assists. Junior Sadie McAda followed right behind her with 10 and a team-high 18 assists. Senior Tess Underbrink recorded 25 assists and 15 digs.
The Eagles have two district matches remaining. They travelled to Navarro Tuesday night but scores were unavailable at the time of publication. They’ll host non-district opponent San Antonio Pieper Friday at 6 p.m. before their final home match next Tuesday against Gonzales.
