With football teams barrelling closer to the opening week, time is coming for the Pleasanton football kickoff banquet. The banquet will take place Friday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Cowboy Fellowship Church hall.
Tickets can be purchased at the Pleasanton Express or Sherry’s for $7, which is good for a barbecue plate and the opportunity to listen to a premiere guest speaker. People will see introductions of the football teams, the cheer squad and the Pacesetters.
Head coach Stephen Liska will give a welcome address.
The guest speaker will be Willie Mitchell, who was a cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1964 to 1970.
Mitchell played in the first two Super Bowls, earning a ring when the Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl II. Before the Super Bowl era, Mitchell helped the Chiefs win two AFL championships. He returned three of his 16 career interceptions for touchdowns.
Mitchell graduated from Wheatley High School in San Antonio and played college football at Tennessee A&I University.
He was enshrined in the San Antonio ISD Athletic Hall of Fame and received the San Antonio Distinguished Citizen Award.
Also, attendees will find a silent auction that includes San Antonio Spurs tickets, Pleasanton Express print and digital subscriptions, jewelry, a handmade cross, gift baskets and more. The banquet and silent auction serve as a fundraiser for the Pleasanton Touchdown Booster Club.
