CHRISTMAS FESTIVALS

Vintage in Verdi

Take a little trip to the country for a weekend of shopping at the 7th Annual Vintage in Verdi, Dec. 6 and 7. The event will take place at the Verdi Community Center, 4 Fairview Rd. in Verdi, just north of Pleasanton.

Hours will be 1-8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $7 on Friday and $3 on Saturday.

The unique outdoor market will feature Funky Hat Friday night, free Kids Korner, live music, all around unique goods, antiques and oddities, vintage coffee, homemade eats and treats, Christmas photo booth, a hot chocolate bar and more.

Merry on Main Dec. 6-7

On Dec. 6, the community is invited to the Merry on Main festivities at the Pleasanton River Park.

The night will kick off with the lighting of the tree trail! In addition to the lighting of the trees, the community will be treated to free Christmas carols, an ice slide and the Merry on Main’s Got Talent Show, hosted by Cleto Rodriquez. There will be food trucks open for the public to purchase food and drinks. Make this a new family tradition. Bring your family, friends and neighbors.

 

 

The festivities will continue Saturday, Dec. 7 in downtown Pleasanton, with the ice skating rink open at 11 a.m. Other activities will include the Kid Zone, Little Miss Merry on Main Pageant, showing of “Elf” at Plestex Theatre, Bike Parade, Christmas Cookie Contest, Santa photos, Jingle Bell Fun Run, caroling, Lighted Christmas Parade, fireworks and more!

Christmas in Charlotte Dec. 14

The City of Charlotte cordially invites you to their annual Christmas in Charlotte event on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Davenport Park.

Things will kick off with the Christmas Night Parade through town beginnng at 6 p.m. Entries include the 2019 Charlotte Christmas Queen, Mighty Trojan Band and the Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming Court.

 

 

Entertainment at the park includes musical performances by Los Nuevos Granisos at 6:15p.m., Los Jimenez at 7:30 p.m., L Tropa F at 9 p.m. and Cadetes de Lampazos N.L. at 11:15 p.m. Other activies include food vendors, games, crafts and more.

BLUE SANTA AND COPS4KIDS PROGRAMS

Pleasanton Blue Santa applications being accepted through Nov. 27

The 7th annual Pleasanton Police Department Blue Santa program is underway. The department is currently accepting applications until Nov. 27.

The program provides gifts for children ages 0 to 17 residing in Pleasanton. Come by the Pleasanton Police Department at 704 W. Oaklawn to complete your application. Please bring proof of residency.

They will be placing donation boxes at various locations throughout Pleasanton. Their goal is to provide gifts to children who otherwise might not receive any.

Poteet Blue Santa Dec. 7

The Poteet Police Association and Poteet Police Department will once again sponsor their annual Blue Santa event on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will kick-off with the Christmas Parade at 6 p.m.

 

 

Gift giving will follow at the Atascosa County EMS Training Facility at 7 p.m. The facility is located at 551 Broadway in Poteet, across from Wells Fargo Bank.

Blue Santa Party Dec. 14

Join Poteet High School senior and 2019 Strawberry Festival Prince, Aidan Denson as he celebrates his 18th birthday with the Poteet Leos Club and Rotary Club on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight at the Poteet Lions Pavillion.

Dress in your favorite 80s attire and dance to the music of SA Lights. Entry fee is one new, unwrapped for children.

Jourdanton Cops4Kids donation boxes set up

The Jourdanton Police Department Cops4Kids program for the 2019 holiday season is underway!

 

 

Cops4Kids assists students of JISD who need a little boost at Christmas time. This year, they have teamed up with Methodist Hospital South and will be inviting select families to join them for a meal, a visit from Santa, gifts and other activities on Dec. 21.

The public can help in the following ways:

Look for toy donation boxes at: Lowe’s Supermarket, the Jourdanton Police Department, The Gym and the Jourdanton Community Library.

Holiday Activities at Pleasanton Library

Bring the kids by the Pleasanton Library on Nov. 25 for a movie at the Civic Center at 10 a.m. and join a group of toys as they set off on an adventure.

Also, don’t miss their Thanksgiving stories and crafts during Toddler Time on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 10 a.m.

Poteet Santa Paws/Christmas Tree Lighting Dec. 6

Bring your pet and take pictures with Santa Paws on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Poteet Public Library from 2-6 p.m. The library is located at 126 S. 5th St.

After, the City of Poteet invites you for their Town Christmas Tree Lighting in the library parking lot from 6-7:30 p.m. Santa Claus will make an appearance as well as performances by the Poteet High School Band and Junior High Choir. Hot cocoa and cookies will be available while supplies last.

Santa is coming to Methodist Hospital South in Jourdanton on Saturday, Dec. 7. This is a free community event set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pancakes with Santa at St. Matthew Dec. 8

 

 

Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa is coming to St. Matthew Catholic Church in Jourdanton on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Families are invited to the FREE Pancakes with Santa event from 8:30- 10:45 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Parish Hall.

Christmas Party Dec. 8

The St. Luke’s Altar Society will host their annual Christmas baked goods and holiday gifts sale at St. Luke’s Church Hall Sunday, Dec. 8, at 11:30 a.m. This is a great opportunity to buy delicious homemade baked goods and Christmas gifts for family and friends. A light lunch and a special appearance of Santa and Mrs. Claus will take place. All ages are welcome to join us for this joyous event.

St. Luke’s Catholic Church is located at 3930 FM 536. Take exit 117 off IH 37, just north of Pleasanton. Mass will be celebrated at the church at 10:30 before the event.

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS

County Line Community Band concert Dec. 1

The County Line Community Band will present “An American Christmas” on Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church. The church is located at 626 Market St. in Pleasanton. This concert is being sponsored by the Longhorn Museum.

 

 

The band will also perform “An American Christmas” on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the University of the Incarnate Word, Luella Bennack Music Center. UIW is located at 4301 Broadway in San Antonio.

Conductor is Toby Knight and president is Todd Phillips.

Both concerts are free and donations are always appreciated.

Christmas Village on Poteet festival grounds

Experience the journey of Christ at the Living Christmas Village. This year’s annual Christmas Village is set for Friday, Dec. 6-Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Poteet Strawberry Festival grounds on Highway 16.

Enter the grounds through the Poteet Lions gate entrance. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and tours start at 6 p.m.

Volunteers are needed in many areas to assist and make this event a success, every week until the event and each night of the event.

GIFT PROGRAMS & DONATIONS

Register for Toys for Tots at VFW Post 4853

Atascosa County residents are invited to sign up their children for the annual Toys for Tots program at VFW Post 4853. Registration is continuing at 809 Oak St. in Jourdanton.

Sign up will end on Saturday, Nov. 30. The sign up days and times are as follows:

•Sundays from 3-5 p.m.

•Mondays from 6-8 p.m.

•Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m.

Please bring a photo ID, birth certificate for each child, and proof of residency (water bill, electric bill, etc.).

CASA seeks donations

CASA of South Texas is always looking for gift donations for the Christmas season, so that their volunteers have that something special to take to their CASA kids during December visits.

Donations are especially sought for any time after Thanksgiving, before Dec. 15. All donations are greatly appreciated! If you would like to assist, you can contact CASA at 830-569-4696.

ACCEPT application dates set for December

It’s the season for the annual ACCEPT toy and food drive, helping Atascosa County families in need.

However, interested families need to apply. To be eligible, remember that you cannot be receiving these items from other agencies or groups in the county.

Application dates will be Dec. 2-7 from 10 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church, 311 N. Smith Street.

Applications will be taken in Charlotte at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Dec. 5-7 from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

In Jourdanton, applications will be taken on Saturday, Dec. 7 at St. Matthew Catholic Church from 9 a.m. to noon.

Applications will be taken at the Poteet Fire Station on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Remember that you can apply at any location, not just the city you reside in.

Volunteers will be at St. Andrew’s Parish Hall at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, to receive gifts only. Then they will be back at the hall from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Dec. 16-19 to set up and organize items. Recipients pick up their items Friday, Dec. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Charlotte Elementary Christmas Gift Drive

This year, Charlotte ISD would like to inspire their elementary students to give back. They are also asking the community to participate in their Christmas Gift Drive for residents at local nursing homes.

Items must be collected by Dec. 6. Please turn in all donations to the Charlotte Elementary Library.

They are asking for donations such as: blankets, socks with grips, slippers, lotion, body spray, deodorant, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, holiday treats, books, winter hats and gloves.

Purse with a Purpose at Begin Again Thrift Store

In the season of giving, the public is invited to give to the Safer Path women in shelter.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, stop by the Begin Again Thrift Store with your donation, for Purse with a Purpose from 3-5 p.m. You can also enjoy free drinks and appetizers!

Begin Again Thrift Store is located at 201 N. Main St. in Pleasanton.

The event is being hosted by Safer Path Family Violence Shelter. Help them bring joy to these survivors by donating a purse, beauty products, stationary, gift cards, inspirational books or jewelry. With your donation, we can help make the holidays special.

City of Poteet Share the Warmth Nov. 25-Dec. 20

South Texas is unpredictable. We all get that. However, we also know when it gets cold it can be rough. Especially for the homeless or those who just don’t have heat in their homes.

Join the City of Poteet and donate a blanket, jacket, gloves or hats to someone who needs help staying warm this winter.

Drop-off is the Poteet Pubilc Library at 126 S 5th St., Monday- Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed from 12-1 p.m. for lunch hour.

Clothes must be clean and either new or used.
