Pleasanton won the first district meeting 4-0 at Poteet on Tuesday in the series between the Eagles (7-10-1, 2-1 District 4A-30) and Aggies (9-6, 0-3 District 4A-30).
Area fans saw two future college pitchers square off, as Pleasanton’s Hilton Mehrmann, a San Angelo State signee, faced Poteet’s Jordan Ambriz, who signed with Southwest Assemblies of God University. Ambriz struck out 11 batters in 6 2/3 innings while allowing five hits and three walks. Mehrmann struck out six batters while allowing only two hits and seven walks.
Mehrmann had the backing of a defense that committed only one error and stranded nine Aggies runners, including four in scoring position.
Also, the Eagles succeeded in moving runners. Mehrmann hit an RBI single and scored on a balk by Ambriz in the first inning. Kameron Parks stole home in the second inning to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Daniel Valadez hit a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Mehrmann and Keith Cordova finished 2-for-4. Cordova, Parks and Mehrmann each stole two bases. Justin Rangel walked twice.
