Plant Q & A Texas A&M

Lawn Q&A

Q. What are the recommended mowing heights for the various lawn grasses? We have Bermuda grass in our front yard and St. Augustine in the backyard, where there are more trees. Our neighbor has Zoysia grass. We mow her grass for her.

A. Mow the Bermuda grass at 1.5 inches or less. St. Augustine performs best when it is mowed at 3.5 inches tall. Mow Zoysia at 2 inches tall.

You didn’t mention Buffalo grass. It should be treated like a groundcover and mowed at 5 inches lawn mower and let them decompose on the lawn. The decomposing leaves provide the lawn nutrients and organic material.

Q. Is it too late to thin our peaches? The Florida King has a fruit about every 2 inches on the tree. Last year the fruit was small and some branches broke with the weight of the fruit.

A. To contribute to the size of the fruit you harvest, the peaches must be thinned before they get larger than a nickel in size. Your Florida Kings should still be smaller than that and will benefit from thinning so there is a fruit every 6 inches on the branch.

Q. What is the best heirloom tomato?

A. Cherokee Purple competes well in the Milberger Top Tomato contest every year. It is my favorite heirloom.
