PISD Safety audit update shared

In kinship as educators and as a school community, Pleasanton ISD extends heartfelt condolences to the families of Newtown, Connecticut, on behalf of all school children.

During any tragedy, we never lose sight of the trauma experienced by others while also taking stock of our own precautionary measures that we observe daily. We also feel it imperative to clear up the confusion regarding the recent announcement by the Attorney General’s Office that Pleasanton ISD did not have a safety audit on file.

Pleasanton ISD did in fact complete a thorough and comprehensive safety audit in January of 2012 and but was unable to submit the report as it was due in December and the submission link had been removed, prior to the arrival of the new Superintendent and the completion of the new audit. The District has since spoken with the Texas Safety Center and they noted this was a “glitch” in the system and they will be “sending a link by the end of the week where we can get it submitted.”

The safety of our students and of all persons here at school and in the district is of paramount importance. All of our campuses have comprehensive emergency operating plans and security procedures in place including:

•Visitor access control procedures that require parents and visitors to provide identification and wear a visitor ID badge upon entering the secure areas of a campus.

•District-wide policy requiring each employee to wear an ID badge at all times.

•A district network of more than 250 security cameras.

•Campuses practice lock- down drills and shelter-inplace drills and practice fire/ evacuation drills monthly.

•Full-time district police officer who has had additional training in the event of a hostile situation involving a live weapon.

•Training by campus personnel on specific issues regarding weapons and intruders.

•Leadership training in the NIMS (National Incident Management System) safety compliance.

•A close-working relationship with area law enforcement agencies and are kept abreast of developing situations.

In addition to these measures, the Board of Trustees approved a second police officer to be hired at the November meeting and a Community “Partners” meeting is scheduled for January 10th to discuss facility and technology needs (including identified security needs such as keyless entry for staff at key locations, i.e. playground exits, etc.).

Pleasanton ISD is continuously working with our students and staff to be prepared in the case of an emergency. We want our campuses to be welcoming to our school community, but we will be ever vigilant of safety first.
