PISD Education Foundation and partners award $31.5K in scholarships

The Pleasanton ISD Education Foundation distributed more money in scholarships to the Class of 2021 than they ever have before, allocating a total of $31,500 to 50 graduating seniors. All applicants were asked to fill out the Pleasanton High School Senior Scholarship application and turn in a biography and letters of recommendation.

Recipients received their scholarship awards at the Academic Awards night held on June 2 at the Douglas R. Williamson Performing Arts Center.

A total of 31 scholarships were given by the Pleasanton ISD Education Foundation sponsored solely from funds generated through organized annual events and donations from individuals and companies that support educational excellence in Pleasanton ISD.

From these funds, the following students were awarded $500 scholarships: Claudia Marie Acuff, Sofia Araceli Aguilar, Kamrie M. Brill, John Cabrera III, Mya Willow Cashiola, Diya Jagdish Chandra, April N. Findley, David Julian Garcia, Matthew Gregron Garcia, Travis Nathaniel Garcia, Zaria Lynn Garcia, Jaimie Ynes Garza, Mariano Luis Gutierrez, Alizony Addie Haren, Ty August Hehman, Mia A. Hernandez, Kayli Rae Kennedy, Lindsey Mae Klein, Jussia Iyan Lopez, Heaven Marquez, Sydney Elise Merecka, Kendall Riley Niemietz, Caitlyn Grace Niewschwitz, Aurianna Shanille Rich, Sofia Isabel Rivera, Hayden P. Schmidt, Tatum Bren Standley, Lacey Kay Stevens, Fe’ Phedra Vielma, Cole Allen Wiechring and Mattie A. Wright.

The Pleasanton Education Foundation Kappelmann Scholarship is awarded in honor of Joyce Kappelmann. Mrs. Kappelmann was a teacher at Pleasanton ISD and her husband believed strongly in the power of education. He donated $100,000 to the Pleasanton ISD Education Foundation in honor of his wife’s work. Recipients of this scholarship, Valentina Gasca Tellez, Reese Edward Decker and Gabriela Celeste Palacios Martinez were each awarded $1,000.

The Pleasanton ISD Education Foundation David Austin Memorial Fund Scholarship is given in honor of David Austin, who was a Pleasanton graduate of 1964. Austin served our country as a Lieutenant Commander for the United States Navy. The recipients, Kaitlyn S. Garcia and Cade Anthony Macmanus, were awarded $500 to put towards their education.

The Suzette Perales Scholarship given by the Pleasanton ISD Education Foundation was established in honor of Suzette Perales by her brother, Emilio Perales and her family. She was a 1986 graduate of Pleasanton High School. The recipients of these $1,000 scholarships were Claire Madison Benavidez, Brianna Nicole Garcia, Auston Jay Gillespie and Gabrielle Arial Sanchez.

The Edmund Tom Scholarship is awarded in honor of Edmund Tom, a fifth-generation rancher from Campbellton. Tom was passionate about agriculture and a strong supporter of youth. He served three terms on the Pleasanton ISD School Board. His family wished to encourage students to continue education in the fields of agriculture and trades by awarding scholarships in his honor. The Edmund Tom Scholarship was awarded in the amount of $1,000 to Christian A. Gonzales, Collin Rene Gutierrez, Lynda Marie Rodriguez and Trent Allen Thrasher.

The Larry Brown Memorial Scholarship is given in honor of Larry Brown, principal of Pleasanton High School from 1976- 1994. Mr. Brown loved and valued the importance of education and left a legacy on Pleasanton ISD. The two recipients of this scholarship in the amounts of $1,000 are Dakota Rayne Fournier and Darren Clifford Kruse. Collin Rene Gutierrez and Trent Allen Thrasher both received $500.

The newest scholarship awarded, the Thomas Alonzo Memorial Scholarship, was established to honor a PHS Math teacher. This year’s recipients each received $500 and were Blake DeRau Moos and Erica E. Santee – these students were on Alonzo’s calculator team.

The Pleasanton Education Foundation President, Heather Foster, stated, “Community partners, PHS Alumni, dedicated volunteers and Pleasanton Independent School District have made it possible to award over $156,500 in scholarships since 2014.”
