As the warm weather beckons us to go outside to hold family barbecues, St. Andrew’s Catholic Church lets us ease into it by holding their family oriented barbecue picnic and auction.
The annual fundraiser is planned for Sunday, May 6, with serving beginning at 11 a.m. Father Gilberto Vallejo and parishioners invite everyone to attend. Chairing the event is Deacon Bennie Garcia and co-chair Juana Benitez. The popular live auction will begin at 1 p.m. Juana Benitez, Sandy Zuniga and Dr. Jimmy Zuniga have collected hundreds of auction items.
The parish has many hard workers lined up to make this a smooth running event. You have to have good food and there will be lots of it. The pit crew will be barbecuing 1,000 pounds of sausage and 2,200 pounds of brisket. Sabas Garza, Larry Chapa, Rigoberto Lopez and Paul Antu and many more will make sure it is all cooked to perfection. Larry Morado will once again season the beans. The meal will also include delicious trimmings – potato salad, cole slaw and dessert.
Mike Watts will be managing the kitchen while Julie Novak, Margie Smith and Genny Rakowitz have all the sides taken care of including the tea handled by Maggie and Minnie Rodriguez and Henry and Josie Sanchez.
Serving starts promptly at 11 a.m. with the aid of Diane Leyva and lots of volunteers. The Teen ACTS group, led by their Youth Minister Elizabeth Lyons, will be serving, helping with children’s games and cleaning. Deacon Garcia reminds everyone the price for the meal is only $7 per plate.
If you want to play Bingo, Rachel Castillo and helpers will get the games rolling.
Gloria Jenks has been collecting cash and the drawing will be held following the huge auction.
Outside there will be lots of children’s games organized by Liz Lyons, Jair and Shelly Ortiz and the youth group. Augustin Montemayor is coordinator for the ever popular piñata. It is always a “bash”. Music will be provided by Johnny Garza’s Texas Tunes for everyone’s enjoyment.
The local boy scouts will be helping out with the tables, so give them a nod for their assistance. Hurley Funeral Home is once again graciously providing their large tent for this event. Country Store, organized by Sally Jaksik, will be held at the air conditioned St. Anthony building.
Myron and Dana Repka have joined Mike and Anita Lambaria to be the official ticket takers for the picnic.
