Free Summer Program to feature arts & crafts

The Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Department continues its free 12 Week Summer Program for youth on Thursday, July 12. BCFS will sponsor arts and crafts activities at 10 a.m. at the Pleasanton Civic Center.

Basketball Clinics in Jourdanton, Poteet

Boys and girls ages 12-15 are invited to take part in free upcoming Basketball Clinics.

The next one will be at the Jourdanton High School Gym on Saturday, July 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be followed by a clinic at the Poteet High School Gym on Saturday, July 28, also from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free prizes, food and drinks. The clinics will be led by Martha Brymer and local athletes.

Pleasanton Library weekly events

“Mondays at the Movies” will continue at the Pleasanton Civic Center from now until August 20 at 10 a.m.

“Teen Fridays” will be held from now until August 24, at 3 p.m. Please call the library at 830- 569-5901 for details.

St. Matthew Catholic Church Czech Day

The sauerkraut is almost ready, kolaches are being baked, and the Markmann Polkateers are gearing up to play lots of polka music while visitors enjoy a fabulous Czech meal. That could only mean one thing: Czech Day! Yes, indeed, St. Matthew Catholic Church in Jourdanton will hold its annual Czech Day Celebration on Sunday, July 15, at the church and parish hall.

The celebration begins with Mass at 11 a.m. St. Matthew’s pastor, Fr. Kazimierz Oleksy, will be the celebrant for the Mass.

After Mass, an authentic Czech meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $9 per plate.

A raffle sponsored by the local Catholic Union of Texas (The KJT) – St. Jerome Society #87 will be held.

Jourdanton AA meets

The Jourdanton Alco- holics Anonymous group meets each Monday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, classroom #1. It is located at 1608 Campbell Ave. in Jourdanton. Call 210-387- 1866 for further information.

Upcoming free Movie Nights scheduled

More free Movie Nights are planned for the summer. The Atascosa Family Crisis Center is very excited to be joining forces with the cities and community to make these events possible. Dates are:

July 20- Pleasanton River Park.

July 27- Charlotte City Park.

Aug. 3- McMullen County Community Center in Tilden.

Aug. 4- Poteet Canyon Park.

Aug. 10- Pleasanton River Park.

Movies will kick off around sunset (7:30 p.m. or so). Food and drink are free while supplies last. Feel free to bring your own snacks. No alcohol will be allowed, as these are family events.

Yesteryear Festival set for July 21

Bring the family to the Yesteryear Festival at the Longhorn Museum on Saturday, July 21, and take a look at the “good old days.”

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with exhibits on the museum grounds and inside. Refreshments will also be available and the event is free to the public. The museum is located on Hwy. 97E in Pleasanton.

There will be a Petting Zoo; story telling, Indian clay art and pottery; butter making and churning; and a performance by Ballet Folklorico, to name just a few. As before, the Boy Scouts will be there to help out with many activities.

Registration deadline for CASA 5K Color Run

The first ever CASA 5K Color Run is set for Saturday,

July 21, at 8 a.m. at the Pleasanton River Park.

All ages are welcome to run or walk in this 5K. The first 75 registered participants will receive a T-shirt to wear for the run.

Pre-registration is $30 per person and ends July 17. Registration the day of the event will be $35. To register, please call 830-569-4696, go to their website at www.casasouthtx.org or stop by their office at 115 W. College St. in Pleasanton.

Registration deadline for Back to School Bash

It is that time of year again, to register for the 6th annual Back to School Bash. The free school supply drive is hosted by New Beginnings Baptist Church, so that area children from pre-kindergarten 12th grade can have a jump start at school.

However, you must register your child by July 27 (or while supplies last) to receive supplies through this program by calling Josie at 830-570-8794.

The Back to School Bash event is set for August 11 at the Pleasanton River Park, when children will enjoy free food, activities, games, school supplies, backpacks and door prizes.
