Mega Food Drive Oct. 17 in Poteet

The San Antonio Food Bank will host a Mega Food Drive on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Poteet Strawberry Festival Grounds. The distribution will begin at 10 a.m. and pre-registration is required at safoodbank.org

To pre-register go to safoodbank.org. Go to the first red block and click on the learn more tab. Then go to the Rural Distribution Sign Ups at the bottom of the page and click on the Atascosa County distribution. Fill in all application links and follow with the green button at the bottom of each page to finish the application.

If you plan to come and pick up food on this day, either pre-register online or call the San Antonio Food Bank at 210-431-8326.

Volunteers are being asked to enter using the Amphion Road gate between 8-8:30 a.m. The gate onto the grounds will not be open until after 6:30 a.m. Clients are asked to either wait at a nearby parking lot or until the gates are open.

There will not be restrooms available. Please stay in your vehicle, make sure to wear your masks to keep everyone safe.

Coughran Hall Market Day on Oct. 17

This Saturday, Oct. 17, head on out to Coughran Hall Market Day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a fun day of shopping.

Find homemade crafts, lawn decor, wood furniture, clothes, homemade soaps, jewelry, homemade jam, fudge, fresh eggs, bread, direct sales reps, antiques, collectibles and more. Coughran Hall is located at 4878 Coughran Rd. in Pleasanton.

There will also be concessions inside to purchase such as breakfast tacos, lunch items, snacks, sodas and water. Proceeds from the concession sales go towards Peace for the Pieces, a social group for special-needs children.

Chicken & the Tulips

Carport Sale on Oct. 17

Every item at Chicken & the Tulips antique shop has a story to tell. Stop by their Carport Sale this Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The sale will take place under their carport, with a side selection of items at discounted prices. Chicken & the Tulips is located at 1110 Zanderson Ave. (Highway 16) in Jourdanton.

Poteet ISD flu shots

Poteet ISD is partnering with Health Heroes to provide flu shots for Poteet ISD students on Thursday, Oct. 22. Shots will be given at the Poteet Elementary and Junior High campuses. Private insurance, Medicaid and CHIP will be accepted. You will also be accepted if you don’t have insurance.

Consent forms will be sent home with students. Online students can print out consent forms at the link available on the Poteet ISD Facebook page. Forms need to be returned no later than Tuesday, Oct. 20. Those with questions are asked to please contact the Poteet ISD Nurse at 830- 276-4401.

Battle of the PDs on

Oct. 23 for St. Jude

The Pleasanton Police Department and Jourdanton Police Department invite the public to join them in their fight against childhood cancer.

The 5th Annual Battle of the PDs will be Friday, Oct. 23 at Chili’s in Pleasanton, to see which department can collect the most “tips” during lunch for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Stop by between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the intersection in front of Chili’s on Highway 97 and Airport Road in Pleasanton to drop your donation off.

Last year during one lunch, the two departments raised over $5,000! While both departments compete over bragging rights, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital is the real winner and recipient of all funds.

CAST Art Contest

Children’s Alliance of South Texas is hosting an Art Contest to promote awareness and increase community involvement. The entry deadline is Monday, Oct. 26.

Entries must incorporate the color blue (color for child abuse awareness) and pinwheels (national symbol for child abuse awareness). Entries must also be two-dimensional.

You must be 17 or younger and a resident of Atascosa, Frio, Karnes or Wilson County to enter. Scan and send your drawing to: christina@castcac.org.

“Amazing Raise” Scavenger Hunt Oct. 24

Pleasanton Ag Boosters will hold their first ever “Amazing Raise” Countywide Scavenger Hunt with cash prizes on Saturday, Oct. 24. The event will start at 3 p.m. at the Verdi Community Center.

You will race across the county solving clues and taking selfies as proof. Call now to book your teams. The maximum number on a team is eight people. If you sign up before the early bird deadline, you get a chance to win two free clues! The early bird deadline is Oct. 17.

Participants will receive a meal with tea/water at the end of the race. There will also be silent auction items and gun raffles. For details contact 210-478- 8991 or 210-843-9388.

Pleasanton Parks & Rec Trick or Treat Trail

Gather your little ghosts and goblins on Halloween and bring them to the Pleasanton River Park at 5 p.m.

The City of Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Department will host a free Trick or Treat Trail with safety protocols in place.

So far, 35 tables have signed up for the event. Event organizers are still accepting table sign-ups, so if your family, business or organization would like to participate, email tgarza@pleasantontx.gov or call 830-569-5904.

Charlotte Trunk or Treat

The first ever Charlotte Trojans Trunk or Treat event in Charlotte is set for Oct. 31. Join them from 6-7:30 p.m. at the drive-thru in Charlotte’s town square. Enter on Yule Street and exit onto FM 140.

Paws for a Cause 5K & 1 Mile Walk on Nov. 7

Registration is open for the 2nd annual Paws for a Cause 5K & 1 Mile Walk on Saturday, Nov. 7. Free Tshirts and tote bags for the first 50 pre-registrations. Few secured spots are left.

The Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Department and Safer Path Family Violence Shelter are co-hosting this event at the Pleasanton River Park, to bring awareness to the co-occurrence of pet abuse and domestic violence.

Other activities will include a Pet Contest, Friendliest Face Contest and more.

Atascosa Animal Allies to host Putts for Paws

Calling all golfers! Golf teams are needed for the Atascosa Animal Allies 3rd Annual Putts for Paws golf tournament on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The event will take place at the Pleasanton Country Club with registration at 11 a.m. The tourney is scheduled to start at noon. Four-person scramble (handicapped), those over 70 years of age may hit from the senior tees. Fee is $100 per player and $400 per team.

First place prize is $1,500, second place prize is $1,000, third place is $800 and fourth place prize is $400. Sponsors are also needed. If you would like to sponsor, or for more info, call 210-748- 4351.

American Legion Veterans Day Fundraiser Nov. 14

The community is encouraged to help save the American Legion Post 436 from closing its doors.

A Veterans Day Fundraiser is set for Nov. 14 at the American Legion, 1404 Zanderson Ave. (Highway 16) in Jourdanton. Dance to the music of Brad Jenschke and Neon Ranch from 8 p.m. to midnight. Entry is $10 per person. The dance is BYOB and masks and social distancing will be required.

Raffle tickets and items will be on display at the dance.

A barbecue brisket and sausage plate sale will follow on Nov. 15, with to-go plates from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plates will include potato salad and beans and are $10 each. Pre-sale barbecue tickets can be purchased at The Good Health Store or Clearwater Pool & Spa in Pleasanton, The Other Shot Glass or State Farm Insurance- Jeff Chicoine in Jourdanton.

Merry on Main 2020

Get ready for Merry on Main Street 2020, Friday- Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5 in Pleasanton. It will be the largest Christmas event in Atascosa County, located in downtown Main Street in Pleasanton.

This Christmas festival for all ages will include a free Kid Zone, ice slide, lighted parade, Firework Extravaganza, Talent Show, Santa visits, live music, Ballet Folklorico dancers and more.

The streets will be lined with strolling carolers, the Grinch, food trucks and shopping. New this year is the “Merrier on Main” after party and dance with Brad Jenschke and Neon Ranch.

Be a part of the Merry on Main Night Parade!

The Merry on Main Lighted Christmas Night Parade will be held on Dec. 5, starting at 7 p.m. Local groups and organizations are invited to join in the fun and participate in the parade.

Mask/face coverings shall be worn by all participants before, during and after the parade. This includes those riding on floats, walking or within vehicles. Event organizers encourage all participants to make their masks part of the parade entry as long as masks are functional.

Parade entries will begin lining up at 5 p.m. starting on Stadium Drive and judging will start at 6 p.m. Those with questions are asked to please contact 830-569-2163 or the Pleasanton Parks and Recreation office at 830- 569-5904.

Gingerbread House Contest at Merry on Main

If you would like to participate in the Gingerbread House Contest at Merry on Main, fill out the pre-registration form by visiting merryonmain.org/forms and turn it in to entertainment@merryonmain.org or to the Pleasanton Civic Center, located at 115 N. Main St. Show off your skills in these categories: Most Creative, Most Delicious Looking, Largest Structure and Most Festive.

Audition for Merry on Main’s Got Talent Show

Audition tapes for the Merry on Main’s Got Talent Show are now being accepted. Video submission deadline is Nov. 1.

Please send a three-minute audition tape to entertainment@merryonmain.org, along with your name, age and performance category (vocal performance, comedy act, instrumental, etc.).

Age groups are 5-15 and 16+. The top 10 contestants in each age group will perform at the Merry on Main Talent Show set for Dec. 4 at the Pleasanton River Park, hosted by Brad Jenschke.

Prizes are first place- $300, second place- $200 and third place- $100.

River Park Wonderland

The Pleasanton River Park Wonderland Christmas Tree Trail is coming back. The Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Department and Merry on Main Street is excited to have the community come together to create this joyful Christmas display for families and friends to enjoy.
