Big Give SA on Sept. 10

The Big Give SA is a great opportunity to show your support of non-profits who give so much to South Texas. You can help local organizations raise funds on Thursday, Sept. 10 by participating in the Big Give SA.

Some of this year’s local participants include: CASA of South Texas, Children’s Alliance of South Texas, A Child Advocacy Center, Connections Individual and Family Services, the County Line Community Band, the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Awareness, San Antonio Food Bank, Endeavors, Atascosa Health Center, Lytle Community Health Center, Courage Ranch, Karnes Community Health Center and Wilson Community Health Center.

Julian & Valerie Augero Benefit on Sept. 12

The family and friends of Julian and Valerie Aguero are organizing a benefit to help with mounting medical expenses, as Julian bravely battles colon cancer.

A benefit is set for Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Poteet Fire Department, 530 Ave. H. The fundraiser will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until sold out. Stop by for sausage wrap combos for $6 which will include Kiolbassa sausage, chips and a canned soda or water. There will also be baked goods available for purchase for $1 each, as well as whole cakes.

Event organizers kindly ask that people not show up before 11 a.m. Also, masks and social distancing will be enforced.

Atascosa Co. Small Business Networking Group

Calling on small business owners, self-employed individuals and entrepreneurs. You are encouraged to attend the Atascosa County Small Business Networking Meet and Greet Event on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Meet with others from 5:30- 7:30 p.m. at Old Pit No. 5 Smoked BBQ, 1108 Zanderson Ave. (Hwy. 16 South) in Jourdanton.

It has been awhile since the group’s initial meeting earlier this year. Much has happened since then and the group would like to reconvene and get things back on track. Here is an opportunity to network and share business information such as:

•What changes have you made to adhere to the state mandates and compliance rules, while keeping everything afloat?

•What are your plans for the next three monthsyear? •How can we spread the word about your business and any product or service you would like to highlight?

Small Business Startup Planning Webinar Sept. 17

The City of Pleasanton and EMC Strategy Group, LLC will hold a Small Business Startup Planning Webinar on Sept. 17 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The webinar will highlight stepby step points on how to prepare, register and plan for a successful business. The webinar will create awareness of the various levels of support for small business owners. This webinar is free and open to all.

SA Food Bank Mega-Food Drive on Sept. 19

The San Antonio Food Bank will host a Mega- Food Drive Distribution at the Pleasanton River Park on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. Address location is 1220 River Park Road in Pleasanton.

Volunteers are needed to help with distribution. If you wish to volunteer please email tgarza@ pleasantontx.gov. Volunteers will need to arrive at the Pleasanton River Park at 8 a.m.

Pleasanton blood drive

Help the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center ensure blood is available whenever and wherever it is needed.

Register for the blood drive that will be held at the Pleasanton Civic Center on Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Thursday, Sept. 24. Times will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. Please note this is by appointment only.

The blood drive is cosponsored by the Pleasanton Rotary Club and AirLife.

FBC Jourdanton Food Pantry on Sept. 26

First Baptist Church of Jourdanton will hold their next monthly drive-thru food pantry distribution on Saturday, Sept. 26. The church is located at 507 Zanderson in Jourdanton.

They distribute at 9:30 a.m. They are also available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to noon to those in need of food. Call 830- 769-3552 to schedule a pick up.

FBC Jourdanton can always use donations. If you find it in your heart to give, you can mail your donations to: FBC Jourdanton Food Pantry, PO Box 490, Jourdanton, Texas 78026.

Voter registration drive Sept. 12

Atascosa County Democrats have launched a series of voter registration drives throughout the county to encourage all citizens to exercise their right to be heard in the upcoming November election. On Saturday, Sept. 12, they will hold a voter registration drive at the parking lot of the Pleasanton Walmart Store, 2151 W. Oaklawn Rd. from 6-8 p.m. You can park your car and they will hand deliver your registration card for you to fill out in your car, or you can sit at a table and fill out the registration.

It won’t take but a few minutes to complete the form and you should receive a voter registration card in the mail within a few weeks. The registration forms are very simple to fill out. They can deliver your registration card to the Registrar’s office or you can take it home to complete and then drop it in the mail, postage paid, or deliver it to the Atascosa County Elections office in Jourdanton, 914 Main St., #115.

The last date to register to vote for the November 2020 election is Oct. 5. Early voting runs from Oct. 13-Oct. 30.

All citizens 18 years and older are eligible to register. Those who will be 18 on Nov. 3 are also eligible. They will also have mailin applications for ballots available. If you don’t know if you are registered in the county, go to registertexas.com to check.

Registering and voting ensures that all our voices in Atascosa County are heard on election day.

September: Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the Pleasanton Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

The Pleasanton Library, along with libraries everywhere, continue to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving needs of our community. They are providing curbside service Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. We also have hotspots available for checkout. Wild Bill’s Pumpkin Fun Run at George Farms Nov. 7

Registration is open for the Wild Bill’s Pumpkin Fun Run on Saturday, Nov. 7 at George Farms. The farm is located at 595 Mobile Home Alley in Poteet.

Preregister at RunSign- Up.com and search Wild Bill’s Pumpkin Fun Run. Entry fees until Oct. 1 are: $30 for the 5K Run/Walk, $20 for the Virtual 5K and $20 for 10 and Under 5K. After Oct. 1, the fees increase. Runners are also able to sign up the day of the race, with registration starting at 7 a.m. and the race starting at 8 a.m.

Racers will run the course through the pumpkin field. Pick out your pumpkin on the way, but remember you have to carry it to the finish. Compete in person or choose the virtual/social distancing option and run in your own neighborhood.

The Backyard Kitchen in Poteet will be running the concession stand at the Pumpkin Run and other George Farms Events.

Sponsorship spots are available. Proceeds from the event will go towards the cost of a diabetic alert dog for Billy George, son of Jennifer and James George.

Merry on Main 2020

It will be here before you know it. Mark your calendars for Merry on Main Street 2020, Dec. 4 and 5 in Pleasanton. It will be the largest Christmas event in Atascosa County, located in downtown Main Street in Pleasanton.

This Christmas festival for all ages will include a free Kid Zone, ice slide, lighted parade, Firework Extravaganza, Talent Show, Santa visits, live music, Ballet Folkloric and more.
